Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke will continue representing Tobago as the island’s global brand ambassador.

Yorke, who has served as Tobago’s brand ambassador for four years, signed the new contract last week at a ceremony in Tobago.

Yorke is a native of Tobago.

The new role will see him “play a bigger, much more specific role in the destination’s international awareness campaign,” Tobago’s government said in a statement.

“Dwight Yorke still has an excellent reputation in the sporting arena,” said Assemblyman Tracy Davidson-Celestine, the deputy chief secretary and secretary of tourism and transportation. “Through this arrangement we will be engaging him as our brand ambassador to specifically target universities and golf clinics with the aim of having them utilize our facilities here.”

Yorke will primarily focus on promoting sports tourism in Tobago, and will “identify and pursue opportunities that will benefit the destination, including opportunities for Tobago to host golf clinics and football training camps for student athletes,” Tobago’s government said.

“It’s a great honour for me to serve as an ambassador for sport,” he said
