The first round of this year’s NBA draft was not without a player from the wider Caribbean region.

Livio Jean-Charles, a 6’9” power forward from French Guiana, was taken by the San Antonio Spurs with the 28th pick in the first round.

While French Guiana is geographically outside of the Caribbean basin, the French overseas department does compete against Caribbean countries in the Caribbean Cup in football and the Caribbean Basketball Federation.

Jean-Charles is the latest in a long line of international players selected by the Spurs.

Of course, Spurs forward Tim Duncan, a native of St Croix, is considered by many to be the best power forward of all time.
