The 14th International Ernest Hemingway Colloquium began Thursday in Havana, aiming to promote the “exchange of information” about the noted writer and adventurer.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction that Hemingway won for The Old Man and the Sea.

That award, along with the 90th anniversary of Hemingway’s first published work, “Three Stories, and Ten Poems,” will be celebrated at the colloquium.

Hemingway lived in Cuba in the 1940s and 1950s, and his home, Finca La Vigia, in Cuba’s San Francisco de Paula, is a museum today.

Dr Michael Connors is giving the keynote presentation this week, sponsored by the Fundacion Amistad, which seeks to “foster mutual understanding and respect between the peoples of the United States and Cuba,” according to the organization.

The colloquium concludes June 23.
