Jamaica will be establishing a “Cyber Emergency Response Team” to protect the country’s Internet infrastructure, according to Minister of State Julian Robinson.

The Minister, whose portfolio includes Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, announced the plans during the 2013/2014 Sectoral debate on Wednesday.

The team will coordinate Jamaica’s response to threats, he said, and “serve as a trusted national point of contact/clearinghouse for cyber threat identification, defence coordination and management.”

Jamaica is also planning to table an amended Cybercrimes bill by the end of this year.

The country first put forth the Cybercrimes Act in 2010.
