Chinese President Xi Jinping will be making an official visit to Trinidad and Tobagoon May 31, Trinidad’s government announced on Monday.

It will mark the first time a Chinese President has visited the English-speaking Caribbean.

The visit will also come just three days after a visit to the country by United States Vice President Joe Biden.

Xi, who assumed office in November 2012, will be in Trinidad from May 31 to June 2.

China, which has been significantly stepping up its presence in the Caribbean in recent years, announced earlier this year an agreement on a $280.6 million loan with Trinidad’s government.

That funding will be used to support infrastructure construction in the country.
