The Cayman Islands will decide Wednesday on its next leader.

The vote comes six months after former Cayman Premier McKeeva Bush resigned following his arrest on suspicion of corruption.

Bush was later formally charged with corruption, an investigation that is ongoing.

His charges included the alleged importation of explosive substances without valid permits and misconduct in public office, totaling seven counts.

In what is shaping up to be a close election, Bush is once again running as leader of the United Democratic Party in the vote, opposed by People’s Progressive Movement leader Alden McLaughlin.

Current Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, who took over as Premier following the resignation of Bush after a no-confidence motion, is running for her seat in Cayman Brac but with a different party.

Bush is the candidate for the West Bay seat in Grand Cayman.

A team from the Commonwealth Parliamentary association will be observing the vote on Wednesday.
