Jamaica Appoints New Senator

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Jamaica has appointed attorney Sophia Frazer-Binns to fill the seat of former Senate President Stanley Redwood, who resigned last week.

Frazer-Binns’ appointment brings the number of female senators to six, the most in Jamaica’s history.

“What we are witnessing today is history in the making and we intend to make this Senate a historic (one),” said Foreign Minister Sen. AJ Nicholson.

She has also previously worked in the Kingston Legal Aid Clinic, the Land Administration and Management Programme and the Office of the Children’s Advocate.

“It is my desire that I shall do everything within my power to ensure that such confidence is never betrayed,” she said.

Redwood was replaced as Senate President by Floyd Morris, the first legally blind senate president in Jamaica’s history.
