Dominica has officially added the Waitukubuli National Trail to the country’s list of eco-tourism sites, the government announced this week.

Dominica now has 13 areas listed as eco-tourism sites.

Charles Savarin, currently serving as Acting Prime Minister, said the ceremonial opening of the 114-mile trail was part of a push to “bring about greater diversification of the Dominican economy.”

The trail “opens up opportunities for communities and individuals located in the vicinity of the 184km trail to establish enterprises for supplying a wide range of services to users of the trail,” he said.

Mikael Barfod, head of the European Union’s delegation to the Eastern Caribbean, attended the opening ceremony. The EU provided support for the project.

“The Waitukubuli National Trail is more than just a site,” said Kelver Darroux, MP for St Joseph. “It represents who we are as a people, protective of our forest, patriots, our resilience and hard work, our survival, history of our marooned ancestors and our indigenous Kalinago.”
