Belize’s government is condemning the recent destruction of the Noh Mul Mayan archaeological site during a mining project last week.

Gaspar Vega, Belize’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Agriculture, said he condemned the incident “in the strongest possible terms.”

The Ministry said it had not issued any mining permits to mine materials from the site, and Vega denied “that he was involved in any way.”

The Noh Mul temple was a pyramid that was estimated to have been more than 2,200 years old. The 60-foo-tall pyramid was almost completely destroyed by a bulldozer. It is located in the northern region of the country.

Belize has launched a probe into the matter, the government said.
