St Croix native Kevin Krigger did not end up making history Saturday, riding Goldencents to a 17th-place finish at the 139th Kentucky Derby.

While Krigger and Goldencents were among the pre-race favourites, it was actually fellow Crucian Victor Lebron that finished ahead of Krigger with a 16th-place finish mounting Frac Daddy.

It was Orb that took home the victory on an exceedingly sloppy track at rain-soaked Churchill Downs, Orb’s fifth straight victory. Orb had been the 7-2 favourite before the race on Saturday evening.

Krigger and Cruciain Victor Lebron were the first Virgin Islands to ever qualify for the Derby.

Krigger had sought to become the first African-American jockey to win the Derby since 1902.
