A new Inter-American Development Bank initiative aims to lower road traffic deaths in the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, using better data collection practices.

The initiative is a partnership between the IDB, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s International Transport Forum and the governments of Jamaica and the United Kingdom.

A major portion of the plan is the promotion of best practices in road safety data collection.

Under the initiative, Jamaica will work to align its road safety data collection with international standards.

Caribbean-wide, road deaths stand at 20 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 17 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in Latin America overall.

When Jamaica completes its exercise, it will share its best practices with other governments in the Caribbean.
