Haiti will be the host country for the Caribbean’s regional CARIFESTA cultural festival in 2015, the country’s Ministries of Culture and Tourism said on Tuesday.

CARIFESTA, the Caribbean Festival of the Arts, is being hosted in Suriname this year, following a five-year hiatus. Suriname also hosted the event in 2003.

It was first held in Guyana in 1972, combining cultural events in areas such as drama, music, literature, folklore, dance, crafts and visual art.

Haiti President Michel Martelly had announced Haiti’s desire to host the event at the recent CARICOM Heads of Government Summit in Petion-Ville in mid-February.

The Haiti edition would be the 12th holding of CARIFESTA since launching in

This year’s festival begins in Paramaribo from Aug. 16 to Aug. 25.

CARICOM did not respond to an email regarding the announcement.
