St Kitts and Nevis will consider the possibility of establishing an embassy in Cuba in 2014, according to Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas.

Douglas revealed the plan during a courtesy call with Cuban Charge d’affaires Hugo Ruiz Cabrera. Cabrera is serving on an interim basis following the departure of former Ambassador to St Kitts and Nevis Jorge Payret Zubiaur.

There are currently 40 students from St Kitts and Nevis pursuing degrees in Cuba, with most in medicine; another six will be graduating at the end of the month in nursing, the first group of nurses to graduate from Cuba.

Other students are pursuing degrees in mechanical engineering, physical education and sports and psychology.
