Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina received a delegation from Vietnam’s government at his office on Friday.

The delegation was led by Tran Dac Loi, deputy head of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Loi said Medina had expressed in interest “to increase and expand trade, economic and political relations” with Vietnam.

Medina reportedly discussed the possibility of both countries opening embassies in one another’s countries.

The Dominican Republic inaugurated Ho Chi Minh Square in Santo Domingo on Sunday, built in honour of the former Vietnamese leader.

Vietnam will soon be building a plaza in tribute to Juan Bosch, the first democratically-elected President of the Dominican Republic.

“There will be two important milestones in the relationship between the two peoples,” Loi said.
