Justice Anthony Carmona was officially sworn in Monday night as the new President of Trinidad and Tobago.

Carmona, who was sworn in as an International Criminal Court judge in 2012, succeeds former President George Maxwell Richards as Trinidad and Tobago’s fifth president.

The country became a republic in 1976.

Carmona is also a former prosecutor at the UN’s International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. In Trinidad, Carmona has previously served as a High Court judge. His appointment as President was announced last month.

Richards, who officially demitted office on Sunday, served as President from 2003 to 2013.
