Cuba Names Esteban Lazo New President of National Assembly

Esteban Lazo has been named the new President of Cuba’s National Assembly.

Lazo has served in the Politburo of Cuba’s Communist Party. He succeeds Ricardo Alarcon, who had served as president of the National Assembly since 1993.

The more than 600 deputies attending Sunday’s opening legislative session in Havana additionally named Ana Maria Mari Machado vice president and Miriam Brito Sarroca Parliament Secretary.

Fidel Castro and Raul Castro attended the ceremony, according to Cuba’s government information agency.

The position of President of the National Assembly is one of the highest in Cuba’s government.
