Jamaican Industry Minister Anthony Hylton is calling on the local business sector to support the government’s proposed transshipment and logistics hub project.

Hylton, who was speaking this weekend at the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce’s quarterly luncheon in Ocho Rios, said the development “presents diverse prospects for growth” in the country.

“This initiative is about positioning Jamaica as a global asset, and the fourth node in the global logistics supply network,” he said. “It has the potential to transform our economic fortunes, from which present and succeeding generations will all benefit.”

The project, which has six major phases, would cost approximately $8 million. It aims to capitalize on the widening of the Panama Canal, which is set to be completed in 2015.

If completed, it would make Jamaica the fourth major logistics node in the world, along with those of Singapore, Dubai and Rotterdam. Hylton has said the project is being modeled on those cities.
