Trainers from United States Customs and Border Protection recently concluded a two-week training session in Port-au-Prince.
The programme trained 60 Haitian customs and tax agents in a variety of techniques involving international border interdiction.
According to the US Embassy in Haiti, instruction focused on “cargo and passenger inspection, document verification, immigration admissibility, targeting and behavioural observation.”
Haiti’s national customs agency (AGD), tax authority (DGI) and anti-corruption unit had sought the US’ help in building capacity to support the government’s efforts to increase state revenues.
The training included classroom instruction and hands-on training exercises at the Port-au-Prince port and the Ganthier customs control post.
