Trinidad Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar met Thursday with newly-appointed Canadian High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago Gerard Latulippe, according to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Winston Dookeran.

Canada and Trinidad and Tobago have had diplomatic relations since Trinidad and Tobago gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962.

The two countries currently cooperate in areas such as health care, education, culture and national and regional security.

Latulippe was named the country’s new envoy to Trinidad in November 2012.

He succeeds Karen McDonald in the post.
