The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States and the government of Argentina have established formal diplomatic relations.

The relations were formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation.

Newly-appointed Argentine Ambassador to the OECS Marcelo Aldo Salviolo presented his credentials to OECS Director General Dr Len Ishmael earlier this month, making Argentina the 11th country to have established formal ties with the Caribbean sub-region.

Ishmael said the OECS sought to form “stronger development cooperation ties, and to explore opportunities for greater South-South cooperation, investment and trade.”

Salviolo said he hoped his appointment would help strengthen relations between the two sides, in “all possible fields.”

The Memorandum of Understanding covers cooperation in a range of technical areas including agriculture and fisheries, health, education and tourism, among others.
