CARICOM Heads to Santiago

A CARICOM delegation including Heads of Government, foreign ministers and CARICOM Secretary General Irwin LaRocque will be on hand in Santiago this weekend for the second CELAC Summit.

The meetings, which will take place Jan. 26 to Jan 28, follow the CELAC-EU Summit this week.

The CELAC Summit will adopt the Santiago Action Plan, which will include a range of statements on regional and global issues. It is aimed at strengthening regional to assist in economic development.

Haiti will be on the agenda at the summit, with the Action Plan including a commitment to support Haiti’s development efforts.

The Summit is being convened under the theme “Alliance for Sustainable Development: Promoting Investments of Social and Environmental Quality.”
CARICOM said member states will emphasize the importance of special attention to the “vulnerabilities of small island developing states.”

Some of the issues that will be discussed will include the promotion of the green economy, increased regional investments, improved integration and the promotion of corporate social responsibility.

CELAC was founded in December 2011.
