St Lucia and the European Union signed a pair of agreements this week, covering housing and water projects.
“[The] signing ceremony for the financing of two worthy interventions represents the continued cooperation and support that the European Union provides to the government and people of Saint Lucia,” St Lucia Prime Minister Kenny Anthony said.
EU funding will go toward several projects; one will support the National Housing and Development programme to provide infrastructure, roads and drainage to build housing units.
The beneficiaries will be 30 households that were displaced by Hurricaen Tomas. The $1.3 million USD in funding will cover a three-year period from 2013 to 2016.
The other EU programme is the “Selective Measures To Provide Sustainable Access To Safe Drinking Water In Saint Lucia Project,” which will provide $1.08 million in funidng over a similar three-year period to supply a “more consistent and sustainable supply of safe drinking water” for the communities of Micoud and Desruisseaux.
The EU is currently supporting the construction of the New National Hospital in St Lucia, its largest project in the Eastern Caribbean.
