A pair of Cuban detainees have escaped from an immigration detention centre in Cayman, authorities said Friday.

The two detainees, Wilfredo Alarcon and Francisco Perez Rodrigues, were discovered missing from the centre Thursday night.

They were discovered missing by the private security that manages the facility during a routine head count. Immigration, police and other agencies were immediately notified.

The two are from a group of 25 Cubans who had arrived in Cayman by boat in 2012. Another group of five Cubans arrived in Cayman Dec. 27, bringing the total of migrants being held for processing and determination of asylum claims in Cayman to 30.

Officials said that was the largest total for some years.
