The Bahamas’ Environment Ministry has announced the creation of a Special Project Unit to address the issue of shanty towns in the country, Minister Kenred Dorsett announced this week.

The unit was created to specifically address the environmental health and housing issues associated with the towns.

The unit will be haded by Assistant Director of the Department of Environmental Health Services Lennard Miller.

IT will address “infractions and environmental issues in shanty towns throughout the islands of the Bahamas,” he said.

“Existing reports on identified shanty towns in Nassau, Abaco, Exuma and Eleuthera are being updated and new reports are being prepared in respect of shanty towns for which the DEHS has not conducted an investigation,” he said.
