Haiti’s government and the World Food Programme have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a school feeding programme in Haiti, according to a statement from the office of Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe.

The agreement was signed by Lamothe and Myrta Kaulard, the Haiti Country Director for the World Food Programe in Haiti, on Thursday .

The programme seeks to help supply Haiti with a system of school canteens able to combat the problem of malnutrition among Haitian children up to 12 years of age.

It will focus on several priorities, with the ultimate goal of providing an “appropriate” meal each day for about 1.5 million students.

It would also work to increase the amount of food supplied to school canteens by small Haitian farmers, along with emphasizing the rules of hygiene in food preparation.
