Alma Adams has been presented with her instruments of appointment by Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes as the Bahamas’ new Ambassador to Cuba

Adams is the first woman ever named to the post.

A former Spanish teacher, Adams said she would look to forge partnerships in areas like agriculture, industries and education, particularly Bahamians studying Spanish in Cuba.

“Since I will be there, many more Bahamians will be speaking Spanish,” she said.

Foulkes said it was a “pleasure” to appoint Adams as the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement.

Adams, who served as Consul General in Miami from 1999 to 2008 and Senator from 1987 to 1992, also presented letters of recall on behalf of former Ambassador Vernon Burrows.
