The governments of St Kitts and Nevis and Kuwait have established diplomatic relations.

The joint communique establishing the ties was signed last week by Delano Frank Bart, QC, St Kitts and Nevis’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and his counterpart Mansour Ayyad Al-Otaibi at a ceremony at Kuwait’s Permanent UN Mission in New York, according to Samuel Berridge, counselor of the permanent mission of St Kitts and Nevis to the UN.

He said the move was consistent with the “strategic objective” by the government of St Kitts and Nevis to increase its presence in the Persian Gulf region in pursuit of trade and investment.

St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas led a delegation to the Gulf region this summer, during which a Dubai-based firm, Range Developments, signed an agreement to build bring a Park Hyatt hotel to the Christophe Harbour development on St Kitts’ southeast peninsula.

That project will be financed in part through the St Kitts and Nevis Citizenship by Investment Programme.

Earlier this year, Kuwait established ties with another Caribbean country, Haiti.
