BP Trinidad & Tobago has discovered approximately 1 trillion cubic feet of gas off the coast of Trinidad, doubling the estimated gas in the Savonette gas field.
The announcement was made during a London meeting between Trinidad Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine, Trinidad High Commissioner to London Garvin Nicholas and a group of BP representatives led by Norman Christie, president of BP Trinidad & Tobago.
The Savonette field was first discovered in 2004 by the Chachalaca exploration well, beginning production in 2009.
BP is proposing to drill a further two development wells in the Savonette reservoirs.
The gas discovered began production in October 2012, with the Savonette 4 well currently flowing at 225 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
If successful, the two new wells are expected to be brought into production over the next year to 18 months.
“The significant investment in the Savonette 4 well and the potential further investment in two additional development wells, combined with the investment in the ocean bottom cable seismic acquisition, is testament to bpTT’s ongoing commitment to the development of our Trinidad and Tobago operations and the wider industry,” Christie said. “This discovery demonstrates that, with the right technology, we can continue to uncover the full potential of the Columbus Basin.”
He said it was the largest discovery for bpTT since 2005.
