The Turks and Caicos Islands has its first-ever female opposition leader in Sharlene Cartwright Robinson, who took up office on Friday.

Cartwright Robinson is the leader of the People’s Democratic Movement, which has seven of 15 seats in the TCI’s House of Assembly.

She called Friday’s events, which included a tour with Premier Dr Rufus Ewing, “unusual and welcoming.”

“It shows the spirit in which we intend to work together,” she said. “I welcome this and look forward to it remaining in this spirit of cooperation.”

She received the most votes in the all-island vote in the territory’s election last week.

“I look forward to working with her and other members of the opposition as well as members of the government and the cabinet,” Todd said.

The opposition members will be sworn in at the House of Assembly on Nov. 28.
