A total of 51 people have now been killed in Haiti due to Hurricane Sandy, according to numbers released Sunday by Haiti’s Office of Civil Protection.

The number represents a significant increase compared to the first few days of the storm, which departed Haiti at the end of the week.

Approximately 80 percent of the deaths, or 38 total, were recorded in Haiti’s West and South departments.

In addition, another 15 people were missing, and 18 were injured, largely due to flooding after the storm’s departure, the office said.
