Guyana established diplomatic relations with the states of Tuvalu and Western Sahara this week during the United Nations General Assembly Session in New York.
The agreement with Tuvalu was signed by Guyana Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and Apisai Ilemia, Tuvalu’s Foreign Minister.
The two sides said they looked to “strengthen friendship and cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and other fields.”
Rodrigues-Birkett also signed the diplomatic relations agreement with Western Sahara’s Mohamed Salem Ould Salek
Also this week, Guyana announced the appointment of a new ambassador to neighbouring Brazil, Merlin Udho.
Udho previously served as Guyana’s ambassador to Suriname from 2009 to 2012.
She succeeds Ambassador Kellawan Lall.
