The governments of St Kitts and Nevis and Lithuania have established diplomatic ties, following the signing of an official agreement this week.

The compact was signed by St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas and Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Azubalis.

The two sides will look to stimulate “bilateral cooperation in international organizations — the United Nations and its specialized agencies,” St Kitts’ government said in a statement.

The government said cooperation with African, Caribbean and Pacific countries was significant in the context of European Union policy.

Douglas, who is in New York this week for the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, has attended high-level talks with several foreign leaders.

Lithuania is the latest Eastern European country to form diplomatic ties with the Caribbean.

Earlier this month, Latvia set up diplomatic relations with Grenada.
