The United Nations is probing the death in Haiti of a peacekeeper from Rwanda, the world body announced in a statement.

The officer was a member of MINUSTAH’s Formed Police Unit working in Jeremie.

The UN said both the Haitian National Police and MINUSTAH officials have already launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the officer’s death, although early findings pointed to an “accidental” one, MINUSTAH said in a statement.

“We lost a member of the UN family,” said Police Commissioner Colonel Tabasky Diouf. “Our most sincere thoughts are with his family and friends.”

The deceased officer was 34-year-old Bisangwa Hassan, who joined the Rwandan police in 2001 and the Rwandan contingent of the UN’s Haiti peacekeeping force in December 2011.
