The Organization of American States has launched a programme to scan birth, death, marriage and adoption documents in Grenada.

The move is part of an inititative to ensure all Grenadians have access to a “civil identity,” and to improve the transparency and accuracy of the country’s civil registries.

The programme is the result of a request from six Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Member States.

Last year, the OAS procured equipment and hired data entry clerks who digitalized 91 percent of birth certificates and integrated them in an application specifically for OECS countries.

While it was later suspended, the government of South Korea provided funding to restart the programme.

Almost all vital statistics records are expected to be scanned and registered in the next six months.
