Kirani James put Grenada on the global stage with his historic, gold-medal-winning performance at the London Olympics.
Now, as part of a bid to boost tourism to the tri-island state, James is offering his take on the go-to spots in the country.
James, in partnership with the Grenada Tourism Board, has listed his 10 favourite places in Grenada, led by Gouyave Fish Fridays, the weekly music, dance and seafood fete in his home village.
Also James-approved?
Grand Anse Beach — the two-mile stretch of white sand beach on Grenada’s southwest coastline
Grand Etang National Park — the hiking mecca along the rainforested slopes of the park’s central mountains (including a crater lake)
Grenada’s National Museum — the building housing the museum was built by the French in 1704, and is part of the foundations of the Fort George complex. Every Friday, the museum hosts live cultural performances, from jazz to poetry.
Mt Hartman Dove Sanctuary — the home of the protected Grenada Dove
Annadale Waterfall — the waterfalls surrounded by gardens of tropical flowers and trees
Belmont Estate — the 300-year-old plantation is set on 400 acres in the rolling hills of northern Grenada, and includes plantation and cocoa tours and a restaurant.
Shopping, Grenadian style — While not a place, shopping is a favourite for James in stores across the country.
Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Station — This is one of Grenada’s largest nutmeg factories. The country is the second-largest nutmeg producer in the world, accounting for about one-third of the world’s supply.
The Spice Basket — the relatively new attraction includes an open-air restaurant and bar, along with a movie theatre.
