Guyana’s government this week delivered solar panels to a series of Amerindian villages, as part of the country’s push to bring green energy to its Hinterland regions.
The villages of Wiruni, Kimbia and Hururu, all of which are along the Berbice River, received panels that are part of a total of 11,000 to be distributed.
According to data from Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, approximately 6,000 solar panels were distributed in the first half of 2012 under the Hinterland Electrification Programme.
The plan targets Guyana’s Amerindian communities, many of which are located in areas that are too far from the electrical grid to receive conventional power.
The programme is part of Guyana’s Low-Carbon Development Strategy.
