Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe Meets With UN’s Simonovic

Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe met Friday with the Ivan Simonovic, the United Nations’ Assistant General for Huan Rights in Port-au-Prince.

Simonovic and Lamothe, discussed security issues, including strengthening Haiti’s national police, justice reform and the promotion of human rights.

Lamothe updated the UN official on the progress of his government in implementing a national institution for human rights with the creation of the Office of the Minister Delegate for Human Rights and the Fight Against Human Rights.

The office is already working on the idea of creating a national observatory for human rights, according to Lamothe.

The two sides additionally spoke about the fight against corruption in Haiti, detention conditions within the country and other public policies.

Simonovic’s visit has included talks with the presidents of the two chambers of Haiti’s Parliament, MINUSTAH officials and diplomatic representatives.
