Samyr Laine, who is representing Haiti in the Olympics, has qualified for the final round of the Men’s Triple Jump in London.

Laine was among 12 of 26 players from the opening round who advanced to the final. He is joined in the final by two other Caribbean athletes: Cuba’s Alexis Copello and the Bahamas’ Leevan Sands.

Laine finished sixth in Group A with a mark of 16.81.

The Harvard graduate, who has been writing a Haiti Olympic Diary for Caribbean Journal, will be looking to bring Haiti its first Olympic medal Thursday since 1928, when Silvio Cator took silver in the men’s long jump at the Amsterdam Olympics.

Cator’s name now graces a stadium in Port-au-Prince.

Now, for the first time since, Laine is looking to bring one home for Haiti when he competes on Thursday in the final.
