Following what he called a “successful” cabinet meeting held in Cap Haitien last month, Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said he intended to hold more such meetings in regions across Haiti.

The goal, he said, is to allow cabinet members to be closer to the country’s population and to give the government a way to hear the concerns of the more remote and vulnerable regions of Haiti.

The Cap-Haitien Coucnil of Government took place July 5.

Accordingly, Haiti’s next such meting will be held in Les Cayes in Haiti’s southern department Aug. 8, Lamothe said.

Expanding the reach of government and promoting development in Haiti’s outer regions has been a major stated priority of Lamothe and President Michel Martelly.

The government has billed the policy as “decentralization.”
