Jamaica will be increasing the national minimum wage on September 3, according to Labour and Social Security Minister Derrick Kellier.
The move means the national minimum wage will increase 11 percent, from $51 USD to $56.65 USD per 40-hour work week.
That works out to an average of $1.41 USD per hour.
The increase came due to recommendations from Jamaica’s Minimum Wage Advisory Commission.
“This is evidence of our attempt at improving the capacity for our productivity improvement of our works in all categories, and for creating the space for decent work and social protection,” he said.
The government is also raising the minimum wage for several security guard classes in the country.
