Haiti President Michel Martelly said he was “saddened” by the death of Ghana President John Atta Mills.

In a statement released by Haiti’s National Palace, Martelly said he expressed his “deepest sympathies” to the members and friends of Mills’ family and Ghana’s officials.

The Ghanaian leader, then the country’s Opposition Leader, was elected in December 2008 and took office in January 2009.

He has been replaced by Vice President John Dramani Mahama.

Haiti is currently an observer in the African Union, though it is seeking to be upgraded to the status of an associate member state.
