Haiti First Lady Sophia Martelly made a visit to Leogane this weekend, highlighted by a visit to the Lifeline Christian Mission.

Martelly’s visit included trips to the municipalities of Grand-Goave, Petit-Goave and the town of Leogane.

She was accompanied on the trip by Gonzague Day, the departmental delegate of Haiti’s western region.

The focus of the First Lady’s visit was to evaluate the conditions and provision of health care in the region.

Martelly met with doctors from three hospitals in the area, including Georges Gauvin, Notre Dame and Sainte-Crox facilities in Grand-Goave, Petit-Goave and Leogane, respectively.

Leogane’s Sainte-Croix is the largest hospital in the region, but it continues to lack adequate infrastructure and medicine, along with facing ongoing staff shortages.

The First Lady said increasing personnel and adding to its drug supply were among her top priorities.

She called on health officials in Leogane to come together and work to improve the condition of the area’s hospitals.
