Haiti’s Government Launches Road Works Project in Port-au-Prince

Haiti’s Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications has launched an operation called “Bouche Twou,” or stop-gap.

The 90-day progarmme seeks to rehabilitate 37 kilometres of road in the metropolitan area of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

The project intends to help facilitate the “smooth flow of vehicles, improve public transportation and significantly reduce damage technological damage caused by automobiles,” according to a government statement.

The Martelly-Lamothe government has been seeking to reclaim portions of urban areas in Port-au-Prince; some initiatives, such as a recent plan to clear hillside shanties for a flood control project, have been met with stiff opposition.

That led to large-scale protests in the capital last week, particularly in the area of Jalousie near Petionville.
