Dominica Sees Geothermal Progress

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Dominica’s Geothermal Energy Project has officially tested its third well in the Roseau Valley, seeing what officials are calling “excellent results.”

The well is located in the Wotten Waven area.

“It looks very strong so far,” said Will Osborne of the geothermal resource group. “The potential, I would guess, is about a couple of megawatts at least, but it’s only partially open. This is just a small diameter test, so for a smaller well, this is a very good result.”

Alexis George of the Geothermal Energy Project said that while there has been a lot of talk in recent years about the promise of geothermal energy, the testing has proven that “it’s nothing but a positive outlook for the geothermal energy project in Dominica.”

The next step includes compiling the results from Dominica’s three geothermal wells to find out the size of the energy reservoir, with the ultimate goal of building a small power plant, according to George.

Dominica first began exploratory drilling in the Laudat area in December 2011.
