By the Caribbean Journal staff

Antigua and Barbuda’s Benna Boys fell to the United States in a CONCACAF World Cup semifinal qualifying match at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

Peter Byers scored the lone goal for Antigua, which fell behind 2-0 on an early goal by Carlos Bocanegra and a penalty kick by Clint Dempsey.

Byers has led Antigua and Barbuda in scoring in 2012.

The United States’ Herculez Gomez added a late goal at the 71-minute mark.

Antigua’s appearance in this semifinal round of World Cup qualifying was its best-ever showing in international play.

Two Antiguan players, Marc Joseph and Quentin Griffith, received yellow cards, at 12 and 67 minutes, respectively.

Antigua is one of two Caribbean countries in Group A along with Jamaica. Guatemala rounds out the rest of the group.
