The confirmation of Haiti Foreign Minister Laurent Lamothe as the country’s next Prime Minister represented a “step forward for the political process and the stability of Haiti,” according to Organization of American States Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza.
The Secretary General congratulated the country’s parliament for “having demonstrated its will to advance toward the future and its capacity for compromise.”
The OAS said it also recognized the efforts of President Michel Martelly, Senate President Simon Dieuseul Desras and the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Levaillant Louis-Jeune, for helping to forge the consensus for Lamothe’s approval.
Insulza called for a swift conclusion to the process so that executive power could “once again be fully functioning” in Haiti.
OAS Assistant Secretary General Ambassador Albert Ramdin will travel this week to Haiti to meet with political authorities and offer the body’s continued support to Haitian institutions, particularly as the country moves toward its next set of legislative and municipal elections.
