Antigua’s Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Gaston Browne, and Member of Parliament Molwyn Joseph attended a one-day meeting on the OECS Economic Union Friday.
The two lawmakers, who were joined by their college of opposition MPS from the OECS, received an update on the implementation of the OECS Economic Union and discussed matters which required a shared responsibility under the revised Treaty of Basseterre.
A focal point of the discussions were the issues of the composition and functions of the OECS Assembly, which will be headquartered in Antigua, and the election of the body’s Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Antigua’s government and opposition have nominated D Gisele Isaac-Arrindell as the speaker of the OECS General Assembly, which will hold its inaugural meeting on June 15 in Antigua.
The Assembly of Parliamentarians is required to serve as a forum for deliberation on primary and secondary legislation proposed for the Union.
It will be comprised of parliamentarians chosen from elected government and opposition members of national legislatures, aiming to reflect the proportionate representation of government and opposition members in each individual legislature.
The one-day meeting was chaired by OECS Chairman and St Lucia Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony.
