With the condition of the Hillsborough Jetty deteriorating, Grenada is considering a plan to develop a new port facility in Carriacou.
Ambrose Phillip, general manager of the Grenada Ports Authority, recently met with stakeholders in Carriacou to discuss the present state of the island’s main port and the need for its replacement.
With eroding piles and cracks on the port’s structure, Port Manager Ian Evans said they are now looking at their options, including whether to replace the port in Hillsborough or develop new port facilities in Tyrell Bay.
While Hillsborough is near the centre of activities, there is no room for expansion, making the Tyrell Bay area the likely spot for a future port.
Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Senator George Prime, who attended the meeting at the Hotel Laurena, said he supported the development of a new port facility on Carriacou, particularly with the goal of aiding business development.
The construction of new port facilities in Carriacou could cost approximately $2.6 million, according to a government estimate.
