A group of marine specialists from South Korea are in Grenada this week to begin work on a marine research project.
The project, called “Research on the South and Southeast Coast of Grenada,” spans from Telescope in St Andrew to Point Saline in St George’s.
It is the third visit by the Korean experts to Grenada. Following their last visit in December, the Grenadian and Korean governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding to signal the beginning of the project.
The research seeks to develop a national policy for the integrated management of the coastal and marine zones of Grenada to promote their sustainable development, and to thereby enhance relations between the two countries.
The work includes marine investigations into coastal elevation, water quality and physical oceanography. The procurement of equipment and materials are being provided by South Korea. Grenadian experts will also receive training in Korea as part of the project.
The projected has a budgeted cost of $500,000, and is slated for completion by the end of 2012.
