Guyana saw an 8 percent decrease in serious crimes at the end of March, compared to the same period in 2011, according to a report from the Guyana Police Force.

There were a total of 968 serious crimes through March 31, compared to 1,053 at the end of March 2011, the report showed.

The police also reported a decrease in murders; there were 33 at the end of March 2011, compared to 28 in the same period this year, a 15 percent decrease.

Armed robberies increased in the period, however, with a total of 246 reports compared to 203 in the same period in 2011.

Armed robberies involving firearms showed a 14 percent increase, with a 34 percent increase in armed robberies using weapons other than firearms.

The numbers followed a reported 26 percent decrease in murders at the end of February, along with a similar increase in the number of armed robberies.
